This afternoon my husband and I, and a friend of ours watched an episode of AD: Kingdom and Empire, made by Roma Downey. (It follows on from “Son of God” which I haven’t seen). It was the second episode after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.
The disciples were fearful, they were shocked, they didn’t quite know what to do. He had indeed risen. Now what!?
They were hiding, the were being sought after and weren’t sure what to do. Then Jesus appeared to them, he told them to gather together and wait for the promise of the Holy Spirit.
Watching this depiction was such a clear revelation to me. These disciples were chosen by God, God knew they could do it… But they were men like any of us today. At first they are afraid, they don’t know what to do, they are shocked. And then Jesus appears and shares with them what they should do.
He also says something vital in Acts 1:8
8“You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you and you shall be
my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the uttermost parts of the earth.”
I love the Amplified Bible version of this verse:
8 But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you,
and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.
I understand now! In their own strength they would never accomplish this. They were frightened and it was not even in their vision what they should actually do. If all of this happened to me I would be freaked out too. And then, once they received this direction they obeyed. They gathered and waited. And then the Holy Spirit came on them and empowered them.
The Holy Spirit was the fire that set them slight, empowered them.
Just thinking of it now I am shocked that I have only just realised this for the first time, why the Holy Spirit was actually so important! I don’t know what I was thinking but it never really hit me just how vitally important the power of the Holy Spirit is for all of us.
16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper,
Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever.
26 But the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to recall (will remind you of, bring to your remembrance) everything I have told you.
In this day and age I look around me. I see a world oblivious, a ship slowly sinking, I see a house divided against itself as various factions appear, based on the various interpretations of the bible and then new age theories that are being assimilated on the fringes of people that are being accepted as gospel.
I don’t know where to begin quite honestly. The task seems huge and yet I am only one.
But God knows what one can achieve and so I surrender my heart, my life over to him to guide and direct me and for the Holy Spirit to lead, guide and empower me.
I feel prayer is vital. To hear and know His direction is imperative, to walk in step with Him and know him so deeply and clearly that no one on this planet can tell you otherwise is priceless.
Hear his voice his direction and obey, do your part to shine the light of his love wherever it will shine.
Look for those who are searching for Truth and deliver it to them. They will be ready to accept it.
The time is now. Feel the urgency that he could come any day now and let it inspire you to be commissioned to share your faith, your salvation, His grace, mercy and tender love.
The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.
And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
