It was God [personally present] in Christ,
reconciling and restoring the world to favor with Himself,
not counting up and holding against [men] their trespasses [but canceling them],
and committing to us the message of reconciliation (of the restoration to favor).
~2 Corinthians 5:19~
What a beautiful passage!
God personally present in Christ. What an amazing statement! God comes down to man, to relate to him and show them he understands them. He is not far off, no, indeed he is as close as men will let him be.
When many people think of how God relates to men, they would think he would be standoffish and aloof, that He would be superior, that He would demand our attention and love. No, this is not the case with our Creator God.
He is God above all others, yet He comes down to men. He meets them in their daily life and wants to draw them towards himself. And then, He makes them the most amazing offer…
Reconciling and restoring the world to favour with Himself. As if God, being personally present in Christ wasn’t enough, He also had a plan. He carried it out. He knew exactly how things stood between us, and He knew that there needed to be a pathway to open up the way between him and His creation.
The best plans, often aren’t quick ones. And the plan that God had in place was not a quick one, but it was perfect. He had everything covered, nothing was left that was not thought about and given consideration.
Not counting up and holding against men, their trespasses… but canceling them…
The image that we have in our minds of many leaders and bosses etc is one of ‘lording it over us’. People in leadership do not usually have a good reputation for being generous, and then there is God. A God, giving us the most amazing picture of generosity in the most beautiful way, and at the most significant cost to Himself.
And committing to us the message of reconciliation ~ restoration of favour. He extends His hand, and His favour to us all, even before we have extended our hand to him and before we accept His exuberant generous offer. He gives to all, knowing not all will accept and receive this message and this favour.
Yes, men will throw it back in his face, they will snub their noses, turn down his offer, they will turn their backs and laugh in His face, and yet, he has still given us the message of reconciliation. Even while we are yet sinners.
After this, it’s all up to us. We are all given this offer, there is no discrimination…. consider this lavish love, consider that we cannot save ourselves, consider that we need Someone to rescue us.
Now, while there is time, open up your heart to Him, accept His gift of ETERNAL LIFE.
